Get Windows for Free for a year

windows_logoFor those of you that want to play around with Windows for some reason, you can. Microsoft is providing its Windows 7 Release Candidate as a free download! The coolest part is that the RC should run for about a year before expiring. So if your running OS X and maybe need to run Windows in a VM, you can get it for free for a year and not feel horrible for purchasing a copy of XP or even worse, Vista.

I recommend running the 32-bit version in a VM as it is a little less resource hungry. Get it while you can… The free download will end in June.

I’ve only just started playing with this application, but it already seems truly amazing! If you need to edit an image and don’t own a copy of Adobe Photoshop, give this online application at pixlr.com a try!

Start promoting yourself for less than $10 bucks

I recently was asked by a friend, “How do I get a website”? The first thought that went through my head was that I needed to offer this person a solution that was incredibly simple and inexpensive. There are many ways to get a website up and running and many potential problems and costs that you may run into depending on the type of site you want to have. For the sake of time and money, let’s say you just want a personal website that you can maintain yourself with little to no programming ability and with a very small budget.

Solution: WordPress.com

Step 1: (Cost $9.99)
Register your domain name with GoDaddy. You can do the same thing with other registrars, but GoDaddy does have very low prices and their customer service is good.

Step 2: (Cost $0)
Create a site at WordPress.com. They offer plenty of instructions and the process is very quick and simple. Video tutorials can be found on wordpress.tv. There are no hosting charges unless you upgrade and/or your site becomes ultra popular and you start getting slammed with hits. But that would be a good thing!

Step 3: (Cost $0)
Log in to GoDaddy and redirect your site to go to your new wordpress.com site URL.

Dine Out for Free

This one take some discipline, but it works great if you have a credit card with a rewards/points program. First you need to accumulate points quickly. You do this by paying all of your bills with your credit card. From groceries to telephone, you’ll gain points more quickly than you thought possible. You just need to be very good about paying off the balance each month. Once you’ve earned enough points, you can start rewarding yourself by selecting gift cards for your favorite restaurants.

I suggest waiting until you’ve earned enough points to treat yourself to a card worth $100. Typically, you’ll find that this has the best point to dollar value.

I made this after seeing one of those “My other car is a…” license plate frames while driving to work. I thought it would be fun to make something for my laptop at work. Enjoy!

I’ve been using Digsby for nearly a month now and finding it extremely useful. Digsby recently released an update which drastically reduces the memory requirements. The application allows you to easily connect many of the most popular IM accounts such as Yahoo, MSN, GoogleTalk. Plus, it allows you to connect to Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and Twitter. Having all these apps wrapped in to one package is terrific!
